Artist Statement

I am a Berkeley artist, largely self-taught. I admire abstract art, art from the ancient Mediterranean, petroglyphs, and other art forms from around the world. I began making art after completing a PhD in Greek Tragedy and Greek and German philosophy at UC Berkeley. As an artist, I work in real media, including paint on canvas and paper, ink, and graphite as well as digital media.  Works are printed in pigmented, archival inks on cotton rag paper. More recently I have moved from pure abstraction to a form of conceptual bricolage that, through the incorporation of text, attempts to reconcile abstract thinking or political commentary with purer forms of aesthetic abstraction. Matters of interest are incorporated as lines of verse, prose, and other textual and symbolic media. My blog  elaborates the conceptual dimensions of my work as well as thoughts on aesthetics, the environment, politics, and the cosmos more generally.
